Material and applications
A PTFE hose is a flexible tube made from polytetrafluoroethylene. This fluoropolymer is valued for its chemical resistance, low friction and resistance to elevated temperatures. PTFE hoses are used to convey liquids and gases, including chemically aggressive media.
The original article describes applications in chemical processing, oil and gas, food production and pharmaceuticals. Suitability depends on the fluid and on the complete hose assembly, rather than on the tube material alone.
Why PTFE is used
PTFE has a low coefficient of friction, which can help reduce resistance to flow. Its low water absorption and resistance to many chemicals make it useful where cleanliness and compatibility are important. Any hygiene requirements must be checked against the documentation for the selected product.
The role of the braid
A metal braid reinforces the PTFE tube and helps the assembly withstand internal pressure. It also provides some protection against external mechanical damage. The reinforcement material and construction must suit the application; stainless steel braid is used on the assemblies presented on this website.
A braided hose and an unreinforced tube do not have the same pressure capability. Select the tube, reinforcement and end fittings together, taking account of working pressure, temperature and the conveyed medium.
Specify the complete assembly
Pressure and temperature limits are specific to the hose design, diameter and end connections. Ratings and material details for a particular LLETALL assembly are available on request.
